Hi, I'm Sara Bugden. I am a second year Fine Arts - Advanced student aDurham College.

My work always incorporates my attention to detail and my flair for colour. Being even more left-brained than I am right-brained really affects the way I approach my art. I’m always learning new things and trying new techniques. I like making unconventional pieces, usually by using collected objects such as gum wrappers and bus transfers. Using unconventional mediums inspires my art. Ever since I was young I would build and make things, from taping boxes together to large mechanical K’nex creations I would start from nothing and create something entirely useless. I enjoy working with my hands and learning new crafts. From carpentry and medal working to crocheting and drawing I’m always building on my knowledge and attempting new things.

With my art I try to showcase imagery and materials that may not normally be consider art. Using colour and artist techniques I try to push my skill set and invoke questions about what traditional art is. When I start to create something it generally starts with me wanting to try something with a material it isn’t really meant for. I come up with some really weird pieces that are generally garbage but in the process I learn a lot about the material, functionality and creating as a whole.

I have recently been doing a lot of work in acrylic and exploring texture through painting. Using acrylic paint is a lot like molding with a paint brush so it is natural progression to go from molding creations with my hands to molding artworks with a paintbrush. I’ve also been aggressively crocheting and gifting a lot of what I make. I’m trying to create with functionality in mind while still being artistic and creative. For this reason I’m always trying to repurpose objects and bring life back into them, while adding a little colour to make it stand out. Most of my art is characterized by vivid colour and odd imagery.
